my complete favorite breed of horse are the Andalusian.

They are GORGEOUS and one of the best dressage breeds.

They are also natural jumpers. I do not own one of these horses, nor have i ever ridden one, considering they cost more than my house most of the time.

These horses excel at everything they do and they have great personalities.

But again, they are very expensive.

conformation in a jumper… Good strong hindquarters. Long legs. Nice sloping shoulder and powerful hind legs. You should study some good jumpers in your area to practice.

Do NOT get a arabian or saddlebred because they are the ugliest jumpers in the world and they are horrible at dressage.

They excel in saddle seat and other arab or racking junk but that’s about it.

quarter horse (for jumping sometimes dressage)

those horses were bred for those disciplines and you can find them for sale anywhere! Conformation wise you want a tall, lean, muscular horse who is already trained in dressage or jumping. For dressage make sure when you go to see the horse the horse is not too high strung, the horse has a long floaty trot, a collected trot, it can trot in place, do a pirouette (the horse can canter in place around in a circle), and leg yeild across the arena. For jumping make sure the horse does not try or attempt to refuse jumps, it appears to enjoy its job (this goes with dressage too), it has square knees when its jumping, it has not had any lameness issues throughout its lifetime, it is not too hotheaded, and it atomatically does its lead changes when landing from jump.

Ask the current owner about its show record, and why they are selling it, and never be afraid to ask if they will go down on the price a few thousand cuz they probably will if you are that interested. All of the dressage stuff i told you about all depends on how much you want to spend on a horse cuz a horse that knows all that probably ranges from $30,000 to $80,000.

But u also can get a level 1 dressage or training level horse that is around $3,000 to $8,000. Hope I helped!

I love Holsteiners for Jumping- and for Dressage like everyone else- Andulasians and perhaps friensans are good.

My favorite breeds for jumping and dressage are Appaloosas.

For a jumping horse, you want to find a horse that has strong hindquarters.

But still has a nice uphill build. For instance, Appendix horsesvare really good jumpers.

For dressage, you’re looking for a horse with a nice uphill build, with pretty movements. You don’t want a dressage horse that has a four-beat canter (Yes, I know a horse that has one.).
You’re also looking for a horse that actively uses it’s hind end and carries itself properly. One way to tell this is to look at their neck; if the horse’s neck has a lot of muscles on the bottom, it usually means that the horse doesn’t use it’s hind end. You want a horse’s neck to have muscle right below the crest, which tells you that they are carrying themselves properly.

Thoroughbreds are great for both, especially jumping! They are super good at dressage, too. I event thoroughbreds and they are so versatile. I love them! People say they are just hot-headed horses and they are spooky but that is so not true.

It just depends on the rider and the horse. I strongly reccomend thoroughbreds for jumping and dressage!
Warmbloods are also extremely good at dressage adn pretty good at jumping. I would also reccomend an Appendix(thoroughbred and quarter horse mix).

They are a lot like thoroughbreds, but have better feet from the quarter horse side of them.

Arabians are great for dressage and jumping but do NOT buy a crazy Arab. You need a collected, experienced one to jump and perform dressage right. I own Quarter Horses and they are awesome for jumping and dressage, just make sure the QH has a collected head and listens to cues.

Thoroughbreds are great jumpers.

They might be good at dressage. Here’s a couple breeds for dressage (they’re Warmbloods): Selle Francais, Trakehner, American Warmblood, Dutch Warmblood, and Oldenburgs. Arabians might be good at dressage.

Well two good breeds for both jumping and dressage I would say would be Oldenburg’s and Thoroughbreds. Just out of my own experience. I have a thoroughbred that i do both jumping and dressage with :] ! !
And conformation wise you should look at the horses legs and hoofs and make sure they Have good straight clean feet. By this i mean that the feet don’t hit or collide with each other when in a walk , trot, canter, ext. And make sure the horse isn’t pigeon toed or anything like that.

Dressage? Most breeds will work, I don’t like arabs and qh’s though, they just don’t quite fit. Hanoverians, Oldenburgs, Holsteiners, Dutch Warmbloods, Trekahners etc.. Warmbloods can be great at just about anything english.

I use my Tb for hunter jumping, dressage and trails. She’s incredibly versatile and even though she’s gree my sister, who has no horse experience whatsoever can rider her.

They have the best build and stamina for jumping. Jumping horses should have long legs and a long back.
